Brazil’s Ministry of Ports and Airports is taking an important step by designing a national sustainability policy for the waterway sector. This includes shifting a significant portion of freight logistics from roads to waterways, aiming for greater efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

While this modal shift is critical, it's equally important to ensure that emissions standards evolve accordingly. The PROCONVE program has already set a precedent for cleaner road transport in Brazil. Now, similar efforts should be extended to the aquaviary sector.
The adoption of IMO recommended measures, such as SECA (Sulphur Emission Control Areas) and NECA (Nitrogen Emission Control Areas), would align Brazil with global decarbonization practices and strengthen the country's role in climate leadership as COP30 approaches.
By taking bold and comprehensive action, Brazil can lead the way in sustainable maritime logistics.
